Prologue from “Fight the Good Fight: A Mother’s Legacy Lives On”
The first thing people noticed about her was her beauty. She stood out in a crowd. But as any new acquaintance would quickly realize, Janet Newman’s physical charm merely decorated a warm, engaging and beautiful spirit.
She was unselfish and servant-hearted in her care for others. She was also wise and disciplined, as well as creative, playful and revered by those who knew her.
She was my mother, and I cherished her with all my heart.
Janet Fishman Newman's death, 11 days before my eighth birthday, left a cavernous hole in my universe.
Several years ago my grandmother gave me a personal gift I treasure — the journal my mom left behind. Within its pages I discovered her legacy of hope, resolve and inspiration. As I share parts of it with you in the
ensuing pages, my prayer is that it imparts to you, too, insights and encouragement.
Though the journal was a personal record kept during my mother’s medical ordeal and not a memoir written to be read by me or my brother, it is surprisingly full of wisdom that seems meant for us. When I reread her thoughts on how to live as a champion in the midst of struggle, I am as strengthened by her wisdom as if she had written me a personal letter. The following scripture expresses the impact my mom’s journal has had on me:
….My son, I give you this instruction …so that by following [it]…you may fight the good fight, holding onto faith and a good conscience. ( I Timothy 1:18)
